Taylor Fire Department in process of filling vacancies

The Taylor Fire Department is beginning the process of creating an eligibility list for probationary firefighters in anticipation of filling several vacancies.
Applications will be available on the Human Resources tab of the City of Taylor Website beginning on January 1, 2014.
The TFD is seeking motivated individuals to fill these posts. All interested people must submit an application to the City of Taylor's Clerk's Office by 4 p.m. Monday, January 20, 2014. The Clerk's Officde is located at City Hall, 23555 Goddard Road, Taylor, MI, 48180. Applicants must provide a current CWW Firefighter Testing Program written report and Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) scores with their application.
Minimum requirements include:
  • Firefighter II certification-Michigan or equivalent
  • Passing current CWW written and CPAT test scores at time of application
  • Licensed State of Michgian Paramedic or be currently enrolled in State of Michigan Paramedic program
  • NOTE: Successful licensing as a State of Michigan Paramedic is a requirement of probationary period completion
  • Applicants will be required to pass a background investigation
  • NOTE: Includes driving record, psychological and medical exams

Job Summary:     Protects life and property by performing fire fighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

Education, Experience, and Licenses: 
High school diploma or equivalent required. 

Experience as a firefighter, preferred. 

Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter Certification Required.   Copies of certification must be attached to the application. 

TCFP Driver Operator, Instructor and Hazardous Materials Technician Certifications Preferred 

Texas Department of State Health Services EMT Basic Certification Required.   Copies of certfication must be attached to the application.

TxDSHS EMT Intermediate or Paramedic Preferred. 

Valid, Texas Driver's License, Class B - Firefighter Exempt.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under supervision of a Fire Captain, the firefighter fights fires and performs emergency medical and rescue work; participates in fire prevention inspections, public education, station maintenance, routine vehicle maintenance, and training activities; performs related work as required.
 
  • Responds to calls for service as part of a team. 
     
  • Engages in all types of fire fighting activities which include rescue, protection of exposures, confinement and extinguishment of fires, overhaul of fire scenes, ventilation, and salvage operations. 
     
  • Performs fire prevention activities, including pre-fire planning and disaster preparation training. 
     
  • Performs routine maintenance of fire fighting equipment and station facilities. 
     
  • Participates in regular drills and training.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Education
 

High School diploma or recognized equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application.

License
Valid Class C driver's license or officially recognized equivalent and acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Training
Successful completion of an Accredited California State Fire Academy or possession of aFire Fighter I certificate issued by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal at time of application. Proof of successful California State Fire Academy completion and or Fire Fighter I certificate must be attached to your application. Failure to attach documentation to your application will result in disqualification from the selection process. All statements made on submitted application materials are subject to verification.

Written Examination

Completion of the FireTeam Entry-level Firefighter Examination is required. All testing must be completed through the National Testing Network (NTN) by February 21, 2014. Please visit

Fee waivers are available through the City of Ontario. Proof of financial need is required.

Upon completion of the entry level exam, all candidate scores are automatically forwarded to the City of Ontario. Candidates meeting the position's minimum qualifications and who attain a passing score on the written exam will be placed on the eligibility list in score order. National Testing Network is a service provided to conduct entry level testing in a standardized, professional environment. CPAT or Biddle Certification
Proof of successful completion of Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) or Biddle Physical Agility Test issued between February 17, 2013 and February 21, 2014.  Candidates must provide the location, date, and overall time (if available) of their Physical Agility examination on their employment application. Both the CPAT and the Biddle are pass/fail exams. The City of Ontario will not conduct its own CPAT or Biddle testing. It is the applicant's responsibility to confirm test dates and times, as well as pre-register for testing by contacting the authorized testing provider directly. Only one testing score will be accepted. Any costs associated with taking examinations are the responsibility of the applicant. Financial assistance may be available through the testing provider.

Selection Process

Applications received prior to the closing date of the recruitment will be screened for conformance with minimum required qualifications listed above. The most qualified applicants will participate in the Fire Department's selection process. Candidates selected to continue in the selection process will participate in a background investigation/polygraph exam. Any offer of employment shall be contingent upon passing a comprehensive medical exam as well as a psychological evaluation.

Yes. I currently work as a Firefighter in another state, how do I obtain the required certifications? 

The requirements include successful completion of an accredited California State Fire Academy or possession of a Fire Fighter I certificate issued by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal at time of application. California State Fire Training (SFT) does not offer reciprocity for certifications. In order to apply for SFT certification in California, you must meet all of the requirements listed in the SFT Procedures Manual 
click here (or refer to pg. 94 SFT Procedures Manual - ver. 2008). As such, you must have served with a California Fire Department to meet the minimum qualifications for a Fire Fighter I certificate.

GENERAL PROCESS
